The film is a crime-comedy/thriller centering on the world of con-artists. It was made to explore a stylish, slick caper film (a genre less common in mainstream Bollywood at the time) with humour, emotion and big twist.
Director Rohan Sippy has said the film is a homage to his father’s film Shaan, and he wanted a fresh genre-blend of con-artistry and Mumbai ambience.
The story follows Roy Kapoor (Abhishek Bachchan), a professional conman leading a glamorous life, whose girlfriend discovers his deception, and then Roy is told he has a terminal brain tumour. He then trains a younger conman apprentice, plans one last big con — only to find that things are not what they seem.
The film also aimed to show the city of Mumbai as a key character — emphasising real locations in the city, the look and feel of the streets, crowds and energy.

कहानी में: रॉय (अभिषेक बच्चन) अपनी प्रेमिका सिम्मी (प्रियंका चोपड़ा) को नहीं बताता कि वह ठग है। जब सिम्मी उसे छोड़ देती है, तब रॉय को पता चलता है कि उसे ब्रेन ट्यूमर है और सिर्फ कुछ महीने बचे हैं। फिर वह एक युवा ठग डीटू (रितेश देशमुख) को मेंटर करता है, एक बड़ा ठग चंद्रू (नाना पाटेकर) को धोखा देने की योजना बनाता है — अंत में खुलासा होता है कि सारी बीमारी और अंतिम ठगी एक बड़ी चाल थी।
मुम्बई शहर इस फिल्म में एक चरित्र की तरह काम करता है — लोकेशंस, माहौल, भीड़-भाड़, कैफे-सैर सब दिखाए गए हैं।

The film is adapted (inspired) from the 2000 Argentine film Nine Queens.
Director Rohan Sippy said: “We had just six weeks’ notice to go on the floors… we wrapped up in just six months.”
Shooting took place largely in Mumbai, on location — capturing “Mumbai like never before”.
Music played a key role — the film re-uses the classic song “Sabse Bada Rupaiya” as a theme track, and the soundtrack contains international flavor (UK-bhangra, Farsi tracks).
