The plot: Narendra “Naren” Sahay (urban, privileged) visits the Himalayan region (Gangotri) and meets Ganga, a village girl living by the Ganga river. They fall in love and marry. Later Naren returns to the city but does not return to Ganga in time. She gives birth to their child, and sets off on a harrowing journey from the mountains to Calcutta to reunite with him and ensure a future for their child.
The story becomes a social commentary: Ganga (the woman and the river) represents purity, innocence, nature — and how society’s greed, corruption, and exploitation pollute both: person and river. The film juxtaposes social politics, moral decay and exploitation with love, innocence and redemption.
