The film was made as a Hindi remake of a successful regional film. The producers and creators believed that the strong emotional and social themes — about workers’ rights, exploitation, power dynamics, and justice — would resonate with a pan‑Indian audience when adapted into Hindi.
यह फिल्म क्यों बनाई गई & पीछे की कहानीयह फिल्म इसलिए बनाई गई थी क्योंकि निर्माता‑निर्देशक ने कन्नड़ की सफल फिल्म की कहानी को हिंदी में दोबारा पेश करने का फैसला किया। मजदूरों के संघर्ष, शक्ति और अन्याय जैसी संवेदनशील‑सामाजिक बातों को हिन्दी दर्शकों तक पहुँचाना मकसद था।
Originally the female lead was to be Divya Bharti, and most portions were shot with her. But after her tragic death in 1993, the film had to be reshot with Sridevi replacing her.
This replacement and re‑shoot was a major emotional and logistical challenge for the team — but they managed to complete it and release the film.
शुरुआत में हीरोइन दिव्या भारती थीं, और उनकी काफी शूटिंग हो चुकी थी। लेकिन 1993 में उनकी अचानक मृत्यु के बाद, फिल्म पूरी तरह से री‑शूट की गई, और श्रीदेवी को लिया गया।

Lead actress Sridevi was nominated for the Filmfare Awards Best Actress for her negative/complex role in Laadla.
Supporting actress Raveena Tandon got a Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Because of Divya Bharti’s death, the film had to be reshot almost entirely with Sridevi — a rare and challenging transition mid‑production.
